About this curriculum

We aim to offer high-quality instruction that delivers a comprehensive understanding of computing, encompassing not only the 'how' but also the 'why' and the 'what next.' Our goal is to provide a robust foundation of skills, knowledge, and conceptual understanding that our students can carry with them into various future scenarios, allowing them to not just navigate but truly thrive in the digital era that defines our world today.

Intent

Computing is a key life skill for the modern child, and we are highly aware at Widey of the importance of creating digitally literate children who can safely and responsibly use a range of programmes. We aim to teach them transferable skills that will remain relevant through their lifetime as technology evolves.

Implementation

Each unit throughout their time at school begins with children discussing the desired outcome for their project and tinkering with the software before planning what they will do to achieve their outcome. We then allow and encourage them to create, make and produce content using a range of apps and software appropriate for their skillset. Moving on, pupils spend time considering ways to modify and improve their projects to get the best results possible.

Upon completing their desired outcome, pupils are given the opportunity to reflect and consider how effectively they have achieved their goal. It is important that at the end of each unit, learners are given the opportunity to publish and exhibit their work to the world embedding skills from the Digital Literacy curriculum. ROCKS is used within each unit to ensure that new learning and skills are embedded.

Impact

Children will gain confidence, knowledge and transferable skill set with a range of technologies. Children will be able to revisit skills from previous units that have been taught and gain a deeper understanding over time. Children will use technology to enhance their learning across the curriculum.  Most importantly, children will become safe citizens online, who question the validity and reliability of information accessed.

They will show positive behaviours online and will understand where to go with any concerns. The children will be able to identify the next steps in reducing future possible dangers and also consider their own privacy and the privacy of others in a range of settings.

Devon & Cornwall police are offering free seatbelt covers to any drivers/passengers with communication or speech & language needs to help make things easier if an incident occurs on the road. The cover contains a card which allows you to add all crucial information including their name, age, address, medical conditions and how they like/need to be communicated with. You can collect from your local PEO (Police Enquiry Office) which could be Crownhill Police Station. You can Google search to see where your local one is and you just need to pop in and they’ll ask how many you need. It’s as easy at that! Peace of mind for you as parents! 💙

A big welcome to our new Foundation children and families! 👋👋👋 The children have settled into school very well - from finding their coat pegs to carrying their tray around the dinner hall! 🍽️ They have been exploring their new environment by learning new rules and routines and making some new friendships! 👬👭👫 They have also been lucky to have their parents join them for dinner this week and Mr Nicholls and Mrs Llewellyn will be visiting over the next few days to read a story to each class! 📚 Just a reminder to our new families to contact your child’s teacher if you need a Tapestry log-in as we are all set up! ⭐️
